Faculty Profile

Giovanni Cancellieri
Full Professor

Expertise: Optical and wireless communications

Prof. Cancellieri is active in telecommunication link design and maintenance, both on optical fibres and on radio propagation, in particular by wireless applications.  The problem of territorial digital divide has been faced in recent years.  Packet routing on the transport optical network has been investigated. Error correction, diversity, MIMO have been adopted as possible solutions in the access segment. Various aspects of information theory are involved.  Photon counting channel, gaussian and fading dispersive channel have been taken as models for the signal propagation, over which proper source and channel coding are suggested.  The application of LDPC codes has been widely investigated.

Capsule Bio

Giovanni Cancellieri received the degree in Electronic Engineering in 1976 and in Physics in 1978, both from the University of Bologna. Since 1980 he has been with the University of Ancona (now Polytechnical University of Marche), full professor since 1986.  At present he is full professor within the scientific sector ING-INF/03 (Telecommunications).  During the 2011-12 academic year, he is the teacher of the courses: “Technologies for TLC’s” (Laurea in Automation-Information Engineering), “Optical Communications” (Laurea in Electronic Engineering), “Information theory and coding” (Laurea Magistrale in Electronic Engineering).  His main research interests are in polynomial theory of error correcting codes, public network design and maintenance, economic aspects of telecommunications.  He is co-author of more than 150 technical papers and of 8 books, some of them having tutorial purpose.  He is co-inventor of an international patent, owned by Alcatel-Lucent, on convolutional encoder design.  Since 2003 he is president of Centro Radioelettrico Sperimentale Marconi (CReSM), a public research organism controlled by MIUR.
