Workshop overview

Metadata in the context of large scale distributed systems and Big Data technologies both play a central role and raise new research issues that attract the attention of researchers and practitioners. Large scale systems and Big Data make integration approaches all the more challenging, with the resurgence of virtual and dynamic approaches based on rich metadata and semantics (think, for instance, of Data Lakes). Also, discovery of relevant sources, sharing and reuse, and data quality strongly rely on metadata. Furthermore, data exploration, description and summarization is becoming a key facility to make sense of a huge amount of data and let users learn from them. This applies to both unstructured and structured data. For unstructured datasets, which are commonly estimated to make up roughly 80% of data currently generated, the challenge is to find scalable and semi-automated methods for generating the metadata required for data indexing, retrieving and analyzing that data. At the same time, the description of complex information such as strategies, goals and requirements, contracts, and processes call for expressive models that are able to represent complex metadata relationships. Metadata also go beyond the traditional description of data and extend to processes: reproducibility of scientific experiments, sharing and reuse of workflows, service composition and orchestration are examples in which process metadata are important. Furthermore, enriching process descriptions with contextual information can enable novel forms of process analytics. Big Data may also mean Big Metadata: as technologies and systems are expected to manage the huge amount of metadata at scale, meta-datasets need to be properly stored, indexed and queried, taking into account metadata evolution and thus metadata versioning.
This workshop aims to provide a forum to discuss recent advancements, exchange ideas and share experiences on new forms of metadata management and use. Papers presenting recent results, research issues, practical applications and case studies as well as industrial implementations are welcome.
Accepted (and presented) papers will be published in Springer’s Communications in Computer and Information Science series. We also plan to invite selected papers for publication in a journal.

Submission Instructions

Submitted papers should present substantially original results not currently under review or published elsewhere. Papers should be written in English and must comply with the Springer formatting guidelines (instructions for authors are available at https://www.springer.com/gp/authors-editors/conference-proceedings/conference-proceedings-guidelines). Papers should be formatted in Latex and submitted in PDF format using the online submission system https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=m2u. Paper length is limited to 12 pages.
